Here's a glimpse into our garden on this lovely November day..

| The arugula-spinach-kale bed covered with a medium weight row cover.. A mini hoop tunnel will soon be erected over top. |
![]() |
| Beside the above mentioned bed, a bed of Japanese turnips, two types of kale, radishes, arugula and mixed Asian greens. |
![]() |
| Here are those mixed Asian greens. Love the crazy colours and textures! Oh yeah, they taste pretty good too! :) |
![]() |
| Close up - Ruby Streaks mustard.. can't get enough of this in salads. |
![]() |
| Oops.. the mild weather has made some of the Asian greens bolt! No worries, the buds and flowers are edible too. |
![]() |
| Green Wave mustard.. gorgeous texture! |
![]() |
| Not sure who this mustard is, but his colour is extreme red! A random ingredient in the mixed Asian greens. |
![]() |
| Hello again Ruby Streaks! |
![]() |
| This Italian parsley is re-sprouting.. shall I take my chances, dig it up and move it to a cold frame? |
![]() |
| An experiment - Various mustards and mizunas thickly seeded on Oct 1st. Now they're 2 to 4 inches tall and will overwinter for Feb/March. |
![]() |
| The carrots are covered with their foot of leaves. In the back, a mature mizuna has been giving us non-stop salads since APRIL!! Crazy productive! |
![]() |
| Rainbow lacinato kale.. I love your blue-green, red-veined foliage! |
![]() |
| Done! This big bed is weeded and amended with composted and topped with chopped leaves/grass mixture. Time for tea! |

Niki, absolutely beautiful veggies. You have some great winter greens coming up.
ReplyDeleteI love reading your update posts.
ReplyDeleteWe are sharing some of the same salad progress, and your post reminds me, what soon will need to be straw covered. Also, it encourages me. Thank you.
I must have...that ruby streaks!!! And what a wonderful red mustard!
There is nothing better than self sown seelings compliments of the garden. Mine a prolific provider of rocket, mizuna and silverbeet. Yum.
ReplyDeleteI just love the stir fry mix very similar to yours. We are eating it now. The fall has been very mild and we are still enjoying the warm weather. I have had a hard time getting the carrots to germinate because of the warm fall.
ReplyDeleteHi Niki,
ReplyDeletemy boyfriend and I live in Halifax and using your book as a guide we built a sizeable cold frame last weekend.....very exciting times. Our first ever attempt at winter gardening!
We need to ask your advise....given the time of year, what would you suggest we plant?
We really hope to hear from you.
Many thanks,
Karyn & Fergus
Hi Guys! It's a bit late in the year to be seeding anything for this winter, but you can try sowing tatsoi, mizuna, kale (for baby leaves, so sow thickly), spinach, arugula, mache, claytonia and such and they will be ready by about March.. They will take a bit longer to germinate and grow - because of the reduced light levels - but come early Feb when the day length is above 10 hours again, they will quickly zoom to harvest! :) Keep me posted.. I'd also love to see photos - nikijabbour@hotmail.com.. Thanks!
DeleteI love your passion for gardening.
